STUDY

The living art of Chado brings together many aspects of traditional and
contemporary Japanese culture guided by the ethical-aesthetic of wabi. Wabi is
expressed in the values of modesty, restraint, sincerity and accord and in the
aesthetic that favors asymmetry, austerity and rusticity. The Way of Tea uses the
medium of preparing and drinking tea as a vehicle to integrate body, mind and
spirit to provide a pattern for living that is fresh and vital.

INTRODUCTORY CLASS
The Introductory Class is for those who have an interest in becoming a tea
student. This class is a one-time experience. However, due to the pace of study,
those who want to continue tea studies should expect to take this course more
than once to absorb all the material before proceeding to the continuing class
level.

Single class fee is $35, plus admission to the Washington Park Arboretum
Japanese Garden. The two-hour class meets by appointment. Please call (206)
328.6018 to schedule a class.

CONTINUING CLASSES
The Continuing Classes are for students who have taken the Introductory Class
and for those with prior experience. This level signifies a commitment to a long-
term course of study.

Tuition is $250 for one class per week for ten weeks, plus $5 per class for
supplies. Admission to the Washington Park Arboretum
Japanese Garden is not
included. Classes meet at Shoseian teahouse on Monday afternoons, Friday
evenings,  Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings, and Saturday
afternoons. For a complete listing please see
Calendar.

Tuition (gessha) is payable quarterly regardless of a student’s attendance. In
addition, a continuing student is expected to become a
member.

Tuition is due at the beginning of the quarter. If it becomes necessary for a
student to take an extended leave of absence (defined as 2 or more months) a
tuition of $35 per month will apply. If the monthly fees prove to be a hardship
for any continuing student, please let us know so that we may arrive at a solution.

ADVANCED CLASSES
Advanced classes are offered monthly for continuing students with an additional
fee of $10 payable at the time of instruction.  Students not enrolled in
continuing classes will pay $40 per advanced class at the time of instruction.

WORKSHOPS
Intensive classes are offered twice a year in summer and winter. The fee is $70
per day which includes obento lunch. Membership in an Urasenke organization
is required. Qualification to study varies with each program.

LICENSE FEES
Traditional Japanese art forms are transmitted from teacher to student. Licenses
are issued to initiate and mark a student’s progress. Students who complete the
Introductory Class will apply for the beginning Shokyu license. As the student
progresses further licenses will be issued to correspond to the course of study.
Please see the
Urasenke Curriculum for a full description of the various licenses.
License fees vary.
